OFTEL investigate [25 October 1998]

OFTEL has pronounced on the Easter misbilling.

There are no tablets of stone from OFTEL yet as the pronouncement seems to be part of a wider investigation, but there have been articles in the Guardian (not online) and the Mail on Sunday.

Both stories state that there have been refunds, agreed between OFTEL and CWC, for 35,000 Southampton ex-Videotron customers; I presume that those for London ex-Videotron customers are related to this.

OFTEL has launched an 'enquiry into CWC', whatever that implies, and (I quote from the Guardian article):
  • has asked CWC to provide it with further details about its billing systems to establish whether [the systems] are up to scratch
  • remains concerned that the company's billing systems may be unreliable and [is] determined to widen [its] scrutiny if needed
CWC say:
  • refunds had not been paid earlier because until last month the company had been transferring billing data to its new [system]
  • it is also beginning to simplify its tariffs by encouraging customers from Videotron, Bell Cablemedia and Nynex to switch to CWC's pricing regime
What about the individual refunds paid earlier, and what about CWC's own handful of residential telephone tariffs? Videotron managed with one ...
