Code substitution [2 November 1998]

There has been a nasty billing problem experienced by people who use Total Connectivity Providers as their ISP.

They dial 01703 904 904 to connect; of late bills have been coming back with the area code changed to 0181 for some or all of these calls. The effect has been to make these calls, notionally to some poor blameless person in Wembley on 0181 904 904, chargeable at national rate!

The problem seems to have started about mid-September, and was sporadic at first but has been reported by more and more people. I'd estimate I've a good two dozen reports now.

CWC are refunding people so, if you're a TCP subscriber, please check your bills.

In fact, I would suggest that everyone checks their bills line-by-line; there have been some exotica reported lately. My 'favourite' is where someone found themselves being charged 10p or 11p per minute for peak-rate local calls. They have two lines, one on a CWC tariff and one on a Videotron tariff; it turned out that the Videotron line was being billed correctly but the CWC line was having the call costs of both lines billed to it ...
