Wrong bills [22 April 1998]
Many ex-Videotron subscribers have reported wrong bills. There appear to be three distinct problems:
- London and Southampton: 'free' calls being charged for on Good Friday and Easter Monday;
- Southampton: a host of problems including two calls supposedly being made at the same time from the same phone, individual 'free' calls (not all) being charged for, VAT being wrongly calculated, 'Your first 100 minutes of local evening calls are free with LocalCall' appearing on the first page of Videotron-tariff bills (!) and so on;
- Southampton: people, again, being moved from Videotron to CWC tariffs without their consent.
In the first case at least, CWC are immediately admitting their mistake and making refunds, which is fortunate for them. Charging for these calls is a breach of implied contract terms as Videotron did not charge for these calls in previous years.
In all cases, my advice is as it always is: first ask CWC to correct the problem and, if they refuse, get down to your Citizen's Advice Bureau or see your legal adviser ...
If your bill is wrong, complain to OFTEL. They have got worked up about wrong bills and CWC are under scrutiny.
