The Thunderer lives up to its nickname [25 February 1998]
Following the CWC Press Office débâcle, Chris has written a very fierce item for publication in his Doctor Keyboard column:
Further to my piece last week in which I stated that CWC had, once and for all, promised that their former Videotron customers could keep their free local calls to Internet Service Providers for as long as they wanted, the company has now changed its mind. Variously claiming that I misunderstood or misquoted their spokesperson (neither case being true), they now say that, at some point, the free calls on the Videotron contracts will end as individual's contracts come to an end. They can't say when this will be apart from 'At some point' - which could, upon questioning, be any time between this afternoon and the end of time.
This is, I have discovered, about par for the course for this company, which makes regular contradictory statements and changes of mind, apparently on a random basis. All I can advise those who might be affected by this is to keep a close eye on their monthly telephone bills and to lobby CWC to keep these calls, which have done so much to promote usage of the Internet by those who can use them, and not to believe a single word anyone at CWC ever says even if you have a written contract confirming it. You can follow further developments about this on the Cable and Wireless Watch web page at [URL omitted].
Sadly, this was watered down by The Times' sub-editors to the much less entertaining:
CWC now informs me that it has changed its mind about providing free local calls to Internet Service Providers for former Videotron customers. CWC say this will happen when individual contracts come to an end (a meaningless statement - AMS). For further information and updates on the situation, subscribers should check the Cable and Wireless Watch Web site at [URL omitted].
