So how were 'true' CWC customers charged? [21 June 1998]
It has never been clear, until now, what customers who joined after June 1997 - and hence have no connection with the four cable companies which merged to form CWC - were charged for calls on Good Friday and Easter Monday. As it turns out, they were charged weekday rates, although there seem to have been problems. In a correspondent's words:
I had a CWC bill of £141.68 from April to May. This bill included over £30 of calls made on Bank Holidays which CWC charged at weekday tariffs (3.95 pence per minute local and so on) unlike BT's local rates. Also, the bill did not add up in certain places. For example:
Bank Holiday (Good Friday)
Date 10/04 Friday Time 15:50 Duration 187:19 Cost £5.93
Bank Holiday (Easter Monday)
Date 13/04 Monday Time 11:38 Duration 155:40 Cost £6.15
That doesn't work out at all [as the longer call cost less although both days were supposedly charged at the same rate - AMS]
A friend of mine rang CWC and asked if they offered weekend rates on bank holiday calls, to which the reply was 'Yes we do'. We complained and were told that 'No we don't' offer bank holiday calls at weekend rates. A further call a few days later and we were told 'Yes we do' offer bank holiday calls at weekend rates!
In the end CWC said they would look at the bill again ... so they did and discounted £7.98 - which they said was the discrepancy in the charges, but we know it's the line rental charge for a month.
So we made another complaint to a different operator (the original guy wasn't there); this time £2.67 had been knocked off (not £7.98). That was the final straw.
Of course there was no precedent, unlike Videotron's charging for these days at weekend rate - so CWC could charge what they liked.
