New switches and modem problems [11 July 1998]

Many people, including me, have noticed that CWC have been upgrading switches; the most obvious effect of this is that the message on dialing 1471 is different.

There is a problem which a number of people, particularly in Southampton, have told me about: if your PC is set up to dial in unattended using a script, and gets an engaged tone, this seems to confuse the modem ... which, sometimes, doesn't drop the line. So the call remains open: if you're an ex-Videotron subscriber this is not a serious problem at off-peak hours, but costs nearly 4p/minute at peak hours.

Certainly, when the switch was first upgraded, I noticed some unexpected behaviour such as a lot of engaged tones and 'number not available' when the modem was already connected. Things have been fine the past couple of weeks, though.
