Free local calls to go [12 November 1997]
As many of you know, CWC have been trying to encourage ex-Videotron customers to give up unmetered local calls by, among other means, binding telephone contracts with metered local calls to new cable television contracts.
These attempts have evidently failed: as a result, CWC intend to remove unmetered local calls in June 1998. Seven separate sources have confirmed this off the record, but CWC seem reluctant to put it on the record except for this terse email:
No final decision has been made, but it currently looks likely that during 1998 the free local calls policy will be replaced with a free minutes per month policy.
Graham S Wallace, Sales Support & Development Manager
'No final decision has been made' is a method of playing for time which CWC have used often; it's improbable that my sources are all mistaken.
It's worth noting that I have sent fourteen letters, faxes and emails to CWC since July; only the first letter was ever answered. So I try to get to know them, but they don't want to get to know me :(
