CWC tariff information removed from here [12 August 1998]

I've decided to remove all the CWC tariff information, and everything derived from it, from the site; the last Videotron tariffs are still there, and I've linked to what is presumably the definitive document listing CWC's tariffs. You'll need Acrobat Reader to read the document.

The reason for removal is the sheer profusion of CWC tariffs, making simple cost breakdowns impossible. Someone queried the latest tariff update, so to try to work out what was going on I read the document. I immediately fell into a morass because:
  • The information in the document doesn't match that on the 'yellow perils' I've got;
  • It is still not clear from the document whether or not VAT applies to the telephone tariffs listed - the cable TV part is perfectly clear, quoting prices with and without VAT;
  • There are now six CWC tariffs - the three existing ones (UKCall, LocalCall and SmartCall) plus three new ones (DayCall, VentureCall and SmartCall Plus) which appear to have been introduced in mid-May and cannot be coupled with cable TV.
One complex source is less bad than two, hence the removal.

That said, some interesting facts can be gleaned from the document:
  • CWC now charge about 25% less for 'direct' (cable-cable) local calls than 'indirect' ones;
  • They now charge almost the same amount (within 7%) for cable-cable local calls and calls to non-geographic (0345, 0645, 0845) numbers;
  • There is a further discount (about 5%) for calls to the Cable and Wireless Internet non-geographic (0645) number;
  • If you have a second CWC line, you get a big discount (about 20%) on non-geographic calls from both lines.
I'm avoiding absolute numbers as they could change tomorrow, but the cheapest call you can get, at the moment, to Cable and Wireless Internet is 0.51p/minute (more than one line, off-peak); that to any ISP with a non-geographic number is 0.55p/minute (ditto). Possibly with VAT added ...
