Informal judgements [6 July 1998]
Three complaints were made against a leaflet sent out by CWC in late March 1998 (that with red, green and blue tabs advertising television, telephone and Cable and Wireless Internet).
The complaints were handled 'informally' so were dealt with relatively quickly with no formal judgement ('upheld' or 'not upheld'). But:
- CWC are to remove all references to 'Go surfing for longer, for less' and similar implications that access via Cable and Wireless Internet is cheap relative to other Internet Service Providers;
- They can continue to use 'Fast access to the Net ...' as the ASA believed that 'most readers would be familiar with the limitation of Internet connections; the claim would not be seen as a comparative one';
- There is no ASA objection to the advertising of both telephone and Internet services in the same leaflet.
For the last, the suggestion was that the degree of separation between telephone and Internet advertising might be OFTEL's call; there's no indication as to whether or not the ASA contacted OFTEL.
