Another Direct Debit problem [6 June 1998]

The move to a new billing system has thrown up another problem for Direct Debit payers.

Although the billing period has changed for most people the date on which the Direct Debit is made has remained the same. For some people this has left a dangerously small gap between bill presentation and payment.

As an example, if I had kept my Direct Debit I would have had about five days to query any mistakes in my bill: my billing period has been changed from 8th-7th to 15th-14th yet the Direct Debit would still have been made on the 21st.

Some people have checked, and the banks' position is that it is 'convention' to leave 14 days between presentation and payment, as Videotron did and CWC do for their own customers. So some ex-Videotron subscribers have complained to CWC; it will be interesting to see what happens ...

Postscript (10 June 1998): it appears that Direct Debit dates are being corrected when the first bill is sent.
